Archived Forum: Is This Normal? > Craving Diet Soda.. Why?

I don't know why but I've really been wanting Diet Soda, I used to drink it a lot in my ED days and I guess I just really miss that taste, I've tried substituting the want with Gatorade but my body keeps wanting the DIet Soda. Is this normal?

Yes yes yes YES. Ugh. That TOTALLY is the hardest thing for me. It's a combination of the flavor and the carbonation. I'm trying to drink either regular soda or seltzer water when I crave it, but I'm with you, there's nothing like it. I know the 'diet' factor feeds into our disorder, but sometimes, like you, I crave it SO bad!

You are not alone!
I don't know what it is about coke zero, but I've broken down twice in the past few months and both times I smiled it was so delicious!
I think it has something to do with tiredness. When I'm tired and have no way out (at work and can't nap) my I crave the bubbles, caffeine, and sweet to get me through. It's your body telling you something, I think. Take a nap!!
Try instead mixing seltzer water with juice (cherry/berry/apple/orange). It's a decent alternative.
But I know what you mean.

I'm pretty sure artificial sweetners are addictive..
You may have already known that, so sorry for my ignorance, but that could be why you're craving it instead of full sugar drinks.. However, I personally prefer the taste of diet drinks. Full sugar drinks make me feel sick and I've never liked them anyways. Pre-ed I used to drink diet soda instead of non-diet, but since I didn't know what a calorie was, I thought them no different that full sugar ones.

I totally agree with theamerci-joy.
They are seriously addictive, like a drug. My aunt is literally addicted to diet coke, and she has been suffering from bad health effects lately (seizures, etc.), and my family believes it is from the large amount of diet coke she drinks daily.
If at all possible, just hold out on drinking the diet and go for regular! I would take sugar over artificial sweeteners anyday :)
